Studies carried out by
different NGOs in India claims that Children below 5 years of age are working,
in horrendous conditions, in mines and quarries. 15% of Odisha’s child
population within the age group of 5–14 works as child labours including those
who work on their family’s farm. More than 80% of girl child started working
before they completed 12yrs of age.
Alcoholism is prevalent,
particularly in male mineworkers, and in some cases leads to domestic violence
and the ill-treatment to children.
It was estimated by a survey conducted by the
Rourkela Social Service Society that every day there is trafficking of at least
20 girls to the cities such as Delhi and Mumbai. At least 7000 girls were
trafficked every year from Sundargarh district. The main reasons for this high
incidence of trafficking are stark poverty, indebtedness due to displacement of
mining and other industries, and the non-implementation of developmental
schemes in the areas after displacement.
According to the Annual
Report (2012-2013) Odisha State Commission for protection of Child Rights a
total of 153 complains were received in the year 2012 out of which 47 cases
were soon disposed. In 2016 the commission have received 1000 complains and 445
of them have disposed. A major part of this complains include sexual abuse,
child right violation, physical and mental torture . However child marriage
have successively decreased over the years.
